North vs. South Shootout tourney...

I’m still trying to decide if I’m going to fish the shootout this weekend.  So I thought I would go out on my kayak last night and see what kind of trout I could catch.  I had an hour and a half till the Cubs played and I went out to the Indian River to one of my not- so- secret spots and slipped into the water.  The water in the area I was fishing was filthy, so I wasn’t sure I was going to get anything in the limited amount of time I had.  I paddled out to about 4 ft of water and rerigged my rods- the spinner I put a 4 inch gold flake jerk bait on and on the bait caster I put one of my personal favorites: a red head, white body, rapala skitterwalker topwater plug.   On my third cast with the topwater plug, I twitched it a few times only to have the water explode around the lure, resulting in my first fish of the evening.  It was a 24 inch trout, not bad for the third cast.  Not too many casts later, I hooked into a much larger one but it shook the hook right away.  I ended a quick hour of fishing with a 12 incher, an 18-20 incher and that 24.  Unfortunately, I’m still not sure if I’m going to take on the challenge of the shootout but after that 24 it’s looking like I might be able to at least place.  I’ll keep you posted and hopefully have some good news come Sunday.
